• Turn left at Wad Medani, 180km from Khartoum.

• The road is severely potholed from Gedaref to the border.

Well this night in Khartoum, in familiar surroundings at the German Guest House, I felt properly homesick for the first time. We were able to skype the family and seeing my beloved bull dogs really made my longing for home and familiar surroundings, family and friends quite intense. But this soon passed and we are excitedly looking at some of the scheduling for the rest of the trip.

Wild camp near Naqa ruins – Meroe pyramids – Ed Damer – wild camp on road to Port Sudan (between Ed Damer and the town of Sinkat).

Today was to be another wonderful day in the desert and it struck us what contrasting natural environments we had experienced during this time exploring Africa. From the magnificent savannahs, lakes and rivers, to dense forests and towering mountains, there was no end to the spectacles we were absorbing on a daily basis. This was the time of the desert.
